JDV questions Teodoro's selection as standard bearer; says Lakas-Kampi-CMD not yet recognized by Comelec
“Why would they call a national executive committee meeting when there’s yet a Lakas- Kampi-CMD merger? So, this meeting is illegal. Imagine choosing a presidential and vice-presidential candidate when their party is not yet accredited, registered, recognized by the Comelec,” said the former president of Lakas-CMD.
However, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Gabby Claudio explained that the September 17 gathering was not a convention but only a part of their selection process.
“The meeting of the national executive committee of Lakas-Kampi-CMD yesterday was not a convention. That was very clear. It’s part of the selection process of the party and we said the essence of that selection process is in the conduct of democratic consultations among the leaders of the party,” he said.
The Lakas-CMD secretary general is optimistic that the poll body will grant their petition to accredit the merger of the two parties.
“We expect the Comelec to be fair and just in giving due favorable action to the petition of Lakas-Kampi for the immediate registration and accreditation,” he said.
Claudio noted that he finds it ironic that De Venecia is the one questioning the merger when he was the one pushing for it before.
“He was the prime mover of the merger. He signed a document on the merger of the two parties as early as 1998. Since then, he had been pushing for the official merger of the two parties until he lost the speakership and the presidency of Lakas,” Claudio said.
The Comelec is set to issue its decision on the Lakas-Kampi-CMD merger within the month
Teodoro's nomination as Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer elates PGMA
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, interim president of the merged party, said he relayed to President Arroyo the result of the consultation meeting last Wednesday, which picked Teodoro as the party’s standard bearer.
Ermita said that President Arroyo, who is now in
Ermita also said that he assured Mrs. Arroyo, who is the chairperson of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD, that members observed the party rules properly during the selection process in picking Teodoro as the party’s presidential bet.
”Masaya naman ang Pangulo noong aking ibalita sa kanya, over the telephone. At nasabi ko sa kanya na natapos na ang aming proseso ng partido, sapagkat iyon naman ang gusto ng Pangulong Arroyo (The President was happy when I relayed the news over the telephone. I also told the President that the party selection process was properly observed. This is what President Arroyo wanted to happen)," Ermita said.
Ermita also said that the party understand what Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Bayani Fernando felt after he was not selected as the party’s standard bearer.
He advised Fernando to respect the decision of the party.
"Hindi naman maiaalis ang mga reaksyon sa mga taong naghahangad ng isang bagay, tulad nga ni Chairman Fernando. Ngunit, iyan ang kadahilanan kung bakit idinaan natin sa proseso, para hindi masabing may pinaboran. (We cannot blame what Chairman Fernando now feel. The selection process was put in order to erase doubt that someone was favored), " Ermita said.
