Aquino satisfied by preparation of gov’t agencies on threats of tsunami—Malacanang
Malacanang said President Benigno S. Aquino III was satisfied with the concerted preparation efforts made by government agencies to threats of a tsunami in the country as a result of the 8.9 magnitude quake that hit Japan on Friday.
In an interview over government-run radio station dzRB (Radyo ng Bayan) on Sunday, Presidential Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said that President Aquino is satisfied with the preparation measures exerted by various concerned government agencies on threats of tsunami to avert a major damage to the country and the Filipino people.
The concerned agencies include the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police (PNP), Local Government Units (LGUs), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), among others.
On Saturday, the Palace also lauded the “bayanihan spirit (cooperation)” between the government and media in facilitating responses to threats of a tsunami.
Valte credited the media for helping the government disseminate information about the tsunami threat, which in turn allowed residents to evacuate early.
As a result, she said, there was no report of any casualty from the tsunami when the waves reached Philippine shores.
A magnitude 8.9 earthquake slammed Japan's northeastern coast Friday, unleashing a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland. Fires triggered by the quake burned out of control up and down the coast. (PCOO)
