Australian government to build 5,000 classrooms in the Philippines

The Australian government is building 5,000 classrooms in the Philippines, a major contribution to the country’s education sector, President Benigno S. Aquino III announced on Friday.

The President met Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd at the Palace Friday morning. Rudd’s visit to the Philippines is important to strengthen the relations between the Philippines and Australia, the President said.

“Isa sa mga gagawin nilang tulong sa atin--may kakulangan tayo ng classroom--5,000 classrooms ang nakalaang gagawin nila at itutulong sa atin next year. Marami rin tayong mga relasyon sa kanila lalo na sa larangang diplomasya, yung mga issue sa West Philippine Sea, etc,” the President said in his speech at the inauguration of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute’s (NKTI) Diagnostic Center Building in Quezon City.

The Chief Executive said the Philippines and Australia maintain close trade and defense relations as well as cooperation on disaster risk management and education.

At the same time, President Aquino said he seized the opportunity to ask Rudd for a possible meeting with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Rudd, a former Australian prime minister visited the country Thursday and Friday (October 20- 21). This was Rudd’s first official visit to the Philippines since he was sworn into office on September 14, 2010.

Aquino declares ‘Eidul Adha’ November 7 as regular holiday nationwide

President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared November 7, 2011 which falls on Monday as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eidul Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

The President issued Proclamation No. 276 on October 20, 2011 based on Republic Act. No. 9849. The said republic act provides "that Eidul Adha shall be celebrated as a regular holiday"

The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) recommended that the observance of Eidul Adha be on November 7 and the Eidul Adha prayer be held on November 6.

The Feast of Sacrifice or Day of Sacrifice is observed after the Hajj -- the annual pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia.

A duty of each Muslim, as described in the Five Pillars of Islam, is to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during their lifetime, unless they are prevented by finances or ill health.

It is the second of the two major Muslim holy days. The other is Eid-ul-Fitr which follows Ramadan. (PCOO)

Aquino approves more funds for the country’s health care system

President Benigno S. Aquino III said he has approved the release of an additional fund intended for the improvement of the country’s health care system. This will involve the hiring of more medical professionals and improving government health facilities.

“Naglaan tayo ng P7.1 bilyon para sa ating Health Facility Enhancement program upang mapabuti ang serbisyo ng rural health units, barangay health stations at mga ospital na pinapangasiwaan ng DOH (Department of Health),” the President said during the inauguration of the diagnostic center of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute in Quezon City on Friday.

At the same time, the President said he also approved the release of more than P2.5 billion to improve the services of government hospitals like the Lung Center of the Philippines, Philippine Heart Center, Philippine Childrens Center and Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth).

“Kabilang din po sa nasabing pondo ang pagdaragdag natin ng 12,000 nurses na karagdagan sa 10,000 sa RN HEALS (Registered Nurse for Health Enhancement and Local Service) eHealprogram bago matapos ang taong ito na kakalinga sa ating mga kababayan sa malalayong lugar,” the President said.

This year, the government was able to deploy around 10,000 nurses all over the country under the RN HEALS program of the DOH, he said.

In the coming weeks, community health teams will visit poor areas tagged by the national household targeting system to provide free vaccination and feeding programs.

Last July, with the help of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the President said the government enrolled more than five million poor families in Philhealth.

“Ginagawa natin ang lahat ng ito upang tulungang maiangat ang antas ng pamumuhay ng mga mahihirap nating kababayan,” he said.

The government will also focus on improving maternal health and decrease child mortality rate in the country, the President said adding that he wants that modern medicine and medical services are enjoyed by the people especially the poor. (PCOO)

National Kidney and Transplant Institute diagnostic center to help government in fighting poverty

President Benigno S. Aquino III said the creation of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute’s (NKTI) diagnostic center in Quezon City is a government tool to eradicate poverty in the country.

“Patunay ang bagong tayong diagnostic center na ito sa pagtupad natin sa ating panata na tutukan ang kalusugan ng mga Pilipino, mayaman man o mahirap, at siyempre lalo na sa mahirap,” the President said during the inauguration of the diagnostic center on Friday.

The building of the new center is a realization of the mandate of achieving universal health care system in the country, he said.

“Bahagi po ito ng agenda natin ng paglaban sa kahirapan,” the President said. “Ang tulungan mabigyan ng patas na pagkakataon ang bawat isang Pilipino para sa marangal at malusog na pamumuhay.”

New equipment and facilities in addition to world-class expertise of NKTI’s personnel would mean serving the people more efficiently, he stressed.

The President thanked the NKTI personnel, its doctors and nurses for staying in the hospital and serving their people instead of leaving abroad to seek greener pasture.

“Mulat kayong hindi dapat ipinagkakait ang inyong tulong at serbisyo sa taumbayan at nasa inyong mga kamay ang susi para umangat ang antas ng serbisyong medikal sa bansang ito,” he said.

NKTI will be the blueprint of the government thrust toward providing good medical services to the people, he said.

The President thanked the leadership of NKTI in building the new diagnostic center that could serve Filipinos more especially the poor and the Land Bank of the Philippines for providing the funds to build the said diagnostic center.

The President also announced Friday the approval of P2.5 billion for the improvement of government-owned hospitals like the Lung Center of the Philippines, Philippine Heart Center and the Philippine Childrens Center and Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth).
