OFWs in trouble receive legal assistance from gov't – Palace
Malacañang on Sunday maintained that the Philippine government, through its embassies around the world, have provided overseas Filipino workers “accused of wrongdoings” with legal assistance from the start as part of its mandate to protect all citizens of the country.
In an interview aired over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said this has been the standing order from President Benigno S. Aquino III.
“The Philippine government, through the Philippine embassy and attaches, are working and defending the Filipinos accused of wrongdoings from the very start,” Lacierda said.
He added that it was not a policy of the State to only offer legal assistance to its citizens when judgment has already been rendered.
“Pag nahuli sila, binibigyan natin sila kaagad ng legal representation at yun ay ginagawa sa lahat,” Lacierda said.
“Hindi totoong pumapasok lang ang gobyerno pag meron nang sentensiya,” he added.
“Wherever a Filipino citizen is situated, we will give assistance to them. That has been the ongoing orders from the President and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario,” Lacierda stressed. (PCOO)
