Palace encourages public to report merchants that violate price freeze

Malacañang urged the public on Sunday to file complaints at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) regarding businessmen who jacked up prices of goods included in the list of basic commodities in areas placed under a state of calamity due to heavy rains and flooding recently.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said calamity-stricken consumers may go to the nearest DTI office or call the agency’s hotline 751-3330 to report markets that unduly take advantage of their plight.

This is in view of reports that some businessmen, especially those engaged in rice marketing, increased their prices notwithstanding the declaration of a state of calamity in their area following the onslaught of tropical storm ‘Maring’.

“Meron pong binigay na hotline ang DTI para po i-report ang mga nagsasamantala sa mga presyo ng ating basic goods and services na kasama po doon sa price freeze… Mag-report po kayo ng mga vendor na nagbebenta ng mga basic commodities sa mas mataas na presyo,” Valte said.

Republic Act 7851 or the Price Law puts an automatic freeze on the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities including rice, corn, cooking oil, fresh and dried fish, and other marine products, fresh eggs, fresh pork and beef, poultry meat, fresh milk, fresh vegetables, root crops, sugar, canned fish, processed milk, coffee, laundry soap, detergent, candles, bread, salt, firewood, charcoal, and essential drugs in areas placed under state of calamity.

Violators of this law may face up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to one million pesos. PND (hdc)

Palace tells public to prepare for tropical depression 'Nando'

Another tropical depression has developed thus Metro Manila and other neighboring provinces are experiencing rain showers and thunderstorms yet again, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as relayed by Malacañang.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte told the public over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan to take extra precaution as tropical depression ‘Nando’ has arrived, only days after its predecessor ‘Maring’ caused massive floods in the metropolis and in several nearby towns.

The Palace official, therefore, advised the public to keep monitoring alerts from DOST-PAGASA and to always be prepared in case this tropical depression brings more rains.

“Galing lang po sa PAGASA, ang umaaligid-aligid po na low pressure area ay isa nang tropical depression at ang pangalan nito ay ‘Nando’. Nakikiusap lang po tayo sa lahat na antabayan ang sitwasyon ng pag-ulan dala nitong tropical depression na ito,” Valte said.

PAGASA released its first thunderstorm advisory earlier at 2:15 p.m. affecting portions of Metro Manila (Quezon City, Marikina), portions of Rizal, Bulacan, Zambales and nearby areas within two hours.

“All are advised to take precautionary measures against heavy rains, strong winds, lightning and possible flashfloods,” the weather bureau said. PND (hdc)

Coloma leads opening of 'Laban ni Ninoy' photo exhibit

Presidential Communications and Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr. led the opening of the “Laban Ni Ninoy” photo exhibit held at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City on Sunday.

The exhibit, which showcases more than 500 photographs taken by Eufrosino “Sonny” Camarillo since August 21, 1983 to chronicle the wake and funeral of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., subsequent demonstrations, rallies and street parliaments; the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution, commemorates the 30th death anniversary of the late former Senator.

Coloma delivered on behalf of the President his speech which he should have delivered had the event not been postponed to another date due to the effects of torrential monsoon rains enhanced by typhoon “Maring” last August 20.

The President thanked Camarillo for holding the exhibit saying it provided the nation with a remembrance of the dark days of the past and the shining events that led to its resurrection.

He appealed to all Filipinos not to give up the fight and to continue to pine for the attainment of freedom for all.

“Patuloy nating pangalagaan at itaguyod ang kalayaan at katarungang hindi na nagawang masilayan ng aking ama, subalit lubos niyang ikagagagalak kung maisasakatuparan nating magkakasama,” the President said. PND (rck)
