Growing reactions to new tourism slogan proves DOT campaign works – Palace

The growing number of reactions to the new slogan of the Department of Tourism, whether online or in print media, is proof that the campaign to attract more visitors to the Philippines is working, a Palace official said on Sunday.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said more and more Filipinos are getting “on board” and joining the government’s move to present the country as the best place to visit in 2012.

The DOT recently launched the “It’s more fun in the Philippines” campaign as part of its intensive efforts to promote the country as a premiere tourist destination.

Valte said that the debates and intrigues triggered by this new slogan “attest that it is more fun in the Philippines.”

“If you check the reactions on line, everybody is getting on board, everyone is having fun with the slogan,” Valte said.

“Ang dami nang lumalabas so it seems the people are on board and are staunchly behind the DOT if we look at the reactions online, she added saying, “it is being widely accepted by our people.”

She expressed confidence that this new campaign of the DOT will succeed to bring in the volume of tourist arrivals this year.

“The measure of how effective the slogan is will be, in the numbers, in the figures, in the number of tourist arrivals that the country will have,” Valte said.

“We will be able to measure by the number of tourist arrivals na madadala nitong “Its more fun in the Philippines” campaign,” she added. (PCOO)

Aquino says Mindanao cancer center in Davao provides hope for poor cancer patients in the region

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte
: The Aquino administration has once again proven its commitment to providing premium and quality health care to the Filipinos through the launching of Mindanao’s only cancer treatment center, here, in support of President Benigno S. Aquino III’s efforts to advance the government’s medical services throughout the country.

In his message delivered by Health Secretary Enrique Ona during the formal inauguration of the Nuclear and Radiotherapy Center at the Mindanao Cancer Center, Davao Regional Hospital on Sunday in Apokon here, President Aquino said that the new medical facility serves as a sign of brighter hope for cancer patients, especially the underprivileged, to better medical care.

The President said that based on data gathered by the Department of Health (DOH), cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases that has claimed the lives of many Filipinos.

“Ang pagbubukas ng Mindanao Cancer Center ay siya ring pagtanglaw ng pag-asa sa mga Pilipinong biktima ng kanser. Ayon sa tala ng DOH, ang sakit na ito ang isa sa mga nangungunang dahilan ng pagkamatay sa ating bansa,” President Aquino said.

The DOH research also indicated that there are some 200,000 Filipinos who suffer from cancer every year, which will be addressed by the advanced equipments in the facility.

The Chief Executive noted that through perseverance, unity and cooperation between the government and the citizenry, there will be no challenges that are hard to resolve.

“Tanda po itong kapag desidido tayong makapagdulot ng ginhawa at pagbabago, anumang uri ng kanser—kanser man sa katawan, o kanser man sa lipunan gaya ng kurapsyon, katiwalian at kahirapan—ay talaga namang kayang-kaya nating gamutin at solusyunan,” President Aquino said adding that the government is now more aggressive in pushing for medical programs beneficial for the Filipino people.

“Puspusan po nating tinutugunan ngayon ang mga suliranin sa sektor ng kalusugan. Todo-arangkada po ang DOH sa pagsusulong ng mga inisyatiba upang mas mapakinabangan ng mas maraming Pilipino ang ating serbisyong medical,” the President said.

The President said that the government has allotted at least P40 billion this year to fund the advancement of medical practitioners’ capabilities, infrastructure and equipment development of the health sector.

The health programs of the Aquino government also includes the increase in funding of the health insurance of the people through PhilHealth from P3.5 billion last year to P12 billion in 2012.

This fund increase will help provide medical assistance for the 5.2 million poor Filipinos who were identified through the National Household Targeting System.

For the DOH’s “Doctors to the Barrio” program, the President said that an additional one billion pesos will be allocated to shoulder the services of additional 200 doctors, one thousand midwives and 12 thousand nurses to the regional health units, barangay health stations and remote hospitals nationwide.

The major services and facilities of the Nuclear and Radiotherapy Center amounting to at least 157 million pesos include Radiation therapy using high energy X-rays which is used to kill cancer cells or to stop them from growing and spreading; Digital Linear Accelerator, a device for external radiotherapy that is designed to destroy the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissue.

The Mindanao Cancer Center also offers other types of radiotherapy that include External Beam Radiotherapy (XTR), Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (MTR) capable, 3-D Conformal Radiotherapy (9CRT) capable and ARC Therapy capable.

The realization of the cancer treatment facility and equipment was made possible through the funds allocated by the Aquino government, particularly the Department of Health with support from the local government officials in Davao region.

The Center will provide adequate, accessible and affordable cancer care to all patients in Mindanao regardless of capacity to pay, from early diagnosis to palliative care. The Center aims to contribute in increasing the awareness of the locals concerning the dreaded disease.

The Mindanao Cancer Center is also designed to provide the best clinical and ancillary services to cancer patients in Mindanao; teach and train medical, nursing and paramedical personnel on cancer care; provide state-of-the art cancer information service; create a database for research on cancer; and to network with various government and non-government organizations for the delivery of radiologic, nuclear and pharmaceutical care of patients. Aquino orders law enforcement agencies to step up efforts in maintaining peace and order and safety of devotees on feast of the Black Nazarene

To ensure that the observance of the Feast of the Black Nazarene is held without any untoward incident, President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Sunday that he had ordered law enforcement agencies, including the military, to step up its efforts to maintain peace and order when an estimated nine million devotees converge in Quiapo, Manila on Monday (January 9).

In a press briefing in Malacanang, the President said that intelligence reports over the past few months have apprised them of the intentions of lawless elements to create disruptions in the National Capital Region particularly during the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

The possibility that this would happen has prompted “us to warn you of the risk in attending the procession.”
“To those who will be attending you will note increased security preparations and measures. Your government wants to ensure to the fullest extent of its capabilities, your safety. We ask for your understanding and cooperation,” the President said.

“I call on our fellow citizens to exercise the maximum vigilance and discipline leading up to, and during, the procession. Report any and all suspicious activity directly to the authorities, or call 117,” he added.

He appealed to the devotees not “to bring the following to the procession: cellphones, weapons, fireworks” as anyone caught doing so would be penalized.

“In any open democracy there will always be challenges coming from antisocial forces. The sad reality of the world today is that terrorists want to disrupt the ability of people to live their lives in the ways they want to, including the freedom to worship and engage in community activities. Your government will do what it has to do, to ensure the safety and security of the public. With the people’s help, we will succeed,” the President said. (PCOO)
