Aquino directs National Historical Commission to lead 113th Philippine Independence Celebration
President Benigno S. Aquino III has directed the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) to lead the organization and implementation of the 113th Philippine Independence Day Celebration on June 12, 2011.
By virtue of Administrative Order No. 11 signed on April 12, 2011 by Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr., the Palace announced that “the amount of P10 million is hereby set aside to defray the expenses for the activities commemorating the 113th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence chargeable against the NHCP budget for Fiscal Year 2011.”
“Any deficiency shall be charged against the regular budget of the participating agencies,” said the AO.
The Philippines yearly celebrates Philippine Independence Day to bring to the awareness of the Filipino people that freedom is a most precious right.
The celebration will be held simultaneously nationwide with Filipino communities worldwide.
The holiday is being celebrated every year to commemorate the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonization.
The Philippines flag was raised and its national anthem was played for the first time in 1898. However, liberty was short-lived because Spain and the United States did not recognize the declaration.
The 1898 Treaty of Paris ended the war between Spain and the United States. Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States.
The Philippines started a revolt against the United States in 1899 and achieved national sovereignty on July 4, 1946.
Independence Day was officially observed on July 4 until the Republic Act No. 4166 that designated June 12 as the country's Independence Day was signed into law by the late President Diosdado Macapagal on August 4, 1964.
Malacanang earlier called on Filipinos to display the Philippine flag at home, offices, schools, public buildings and plazas, as well as embassies and consulates overseas beginning May 28, in celebration of National Flag Day, until June 12, 2011 in preparation for Independence Day. (PCOO)
