“The entire nation was thrilled by the victory of our very own Philippine Azkals. I join our people in celebrating their 5-1 aggregate win over Sri Lanka. Aquino swears-in Mar Roxas as DOTC Secretary
President Benigno S. Aquino III formally swore in former Senator Mar Roxas as Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications in simple ceremonies held in MalacaƱang Monday.
The President had earlier announced the appointment of Roxas to replace former Secretary Jose de Jesus who resigned last June 30.
In an interview, Roxas said he was thankful for the trust and confidence of President Aquino in appointing him as top dog of the DoTC, adding that he would do his best in order to repay the President’s trust.
He cited one of the President’s marching orders to him was to review the “problematic contracts” that smacked of irregularities and would not benefit Filipinos in any way.
According to Roxas, his program of work at the DoTC would include: ensuring safe, affordable and reliable service expected by the people; reviewing “problematic contracts;” interconnecting the Philippine archipelago; ensuring the cohesiveness or coherence of a national transport network; and, cleaning up the procurement system in the agency.
Aside from Roxas, three other government officials took their oaths of office before the President, namely, Amando Tetangco as Central Bank Governor and Felipe Medalla and Alfredo Antonio as members of the Monetary Board. (PCOO)
Government signs peace pact with Cordillera Liberation Army
President Benigno S. Aquino III underscored the concerted efforts of the government and the people of Cordillera in attaining peace and progress in the region as envisioned by his mother, the late former President Corazon C. Aquino.
In his speech following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the government and the Cordillera Bodong Administration-Cordillera Peoples Liberation Army (CBA-CPLA) entitled Towards the CPLA’s Final Disposition of Arms and Forces and its Transformation into a Potent Socio-Economic Unarmed Force, President Aquino acknowledged the efforts from both parties to attain peace in the region.
The Chief Executive said that one of the concrete accomplishments of his mother was the signing of the Mt. Data Peace Accord between the two parties, 25 years ago.
The President further said that the signing of the peace pact signals the end of over two decades of armed struggle in the Cordilleras.
President Aquino thanked the concerned groups for taking painstaking efforts during the peace negotiations that resulted to attaining the much-wanted peace in the region.
He urged the people of the Cordilleras to continue cooperating with the government in maintaining peace and order in their area as he challenged them to take their part towards quietude and progress.
The MOA stipulates that the government and the CBA-CPLA will work together for peace and development in Cordillera.
It also lays down the following components that will contribute to the final disposition of arms and forces of the CPLA and their transformation from an armed group into a socio-economic force in the region: economic integration and livelihood support for CPLA members, development of communities with CBA-CPLA presence, inter-municipal and inter-barangay economic development, documentation of the CBA-CPLA struggle and the transformation of the CBA-CPLA into a legal entity for socio-economic development.
Other further significant features in the agreement include the creation of the joint committee that will oversee the management, operation and utilization of resources in the implementation of development projects; monitoring, evaluation and transparency measures are in place to check progress of the accord; and a grievance mechanism as well as a mediation and conciliation system.
Presidential Adviser for the Peace Process Secretary Teresita Quintos-Deles signed the agreement for the government while CBA president Marcelina Bahatan and CPLA chairman Arsenio Humiding inked the pact for the CBA-CPLA side.
To symbolize commitment to the pact, the agreeing parties exchanged tokens. The CBA-CPLA handed over to the President a hand-woven traditional G-string ensemble while in return, President Aquino gave a capiz sculpture of the symbol that marks the Aquino administration’s vision of peace and development for the country and the Filipino people.
