Palace extends condolences to the victims of Norway blast, shooting rampage

Malacanang extended its condolences to the people of Norway following a deadly blast and a shooting rampage that killed less than 100 people.

“Wala naman pong Pinoy na nasaktan doon sa pag-atake pero nakikiramay po tayo dun sa pamilya ng mga nadamay po doon sa pag-atake. Gusto po nating ipaabot ang ating pakikiramay sa kanila. Alam po natin kung gaano kahirap yung mawalan ng mga kababayan lalo sa ganitong pagkakataon,” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan Saturday.

Valte also said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is already making an assessment of the situation whether Filipinos are among the injured or died in the attacks, saying families of those working in Norway can call DFA action center in Manila.

“We are now in contact with our embassy in Oslo and gumagalaw na po sila ngayon to check on our citizens,” Valte said, adding the government still has no plans of evacuating Filipinos in Norway

The two countries enjoy special relations because the Scandinavian nation has been helping the Philippines end the decade-long communist rebellion.

Valte said it is heartbreaking for a peaceful country like Norway to become a victim of such deadly terrorist attacks.

“Kaya nga po yun ang una nating ipinaabot, yung ating pakikiramay doon sa mga naulila sa naging pag-atake,” she said noting Norway’s role as the third party facilitator in the National Democratic Front-Government of the Republic of the Philippines (NDF-GRP) peace talks.

Norwegian police reported that at least 80 people died as a result of a rampage Friday on a Norwegian island, an attack that came shortly after an explosion in the nation’s capital reportedly killed seven people.

In all, 90 people were hospitalized as a result of the Oslo blast, according to recent reports.

Norwegian authorities have detained a 32-year-old Norwegian man who they suspect opened fire on scores at the ruling Labour Party's youth camp on Utoya Island, about 20 miles from Oslo. (PCOO)

Aquino to highlight achievements, vision in his SONA

President Benigno Aquino III will highlight what he has done in his first year in office as well as where he intends to bring the country next year, when he delivers his state-of-the-nation (SONA) on Monday, Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said.

“Kailangan po nating tandaan na ang Pangulong Aquino po ay nahalal noong 2010 dahil sa kanyang pangakong anti-corruption program, at ipakikita po ng Pangulo kung ano ang nagawa na to fulfill that promise in the year or so that he has been in office,” Valte said in an interview aired over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan on Saturday.

“Pangalawa, yung isa pa pong pag-uusapan ng Pangulo, is kung saan niya tayo gustong mapunta in a year’s time,” she added.

Asked by reporters if the public can expect measurable announcements from the President like job generation, poverty reduction and growth target, Valte said the President will report about those issues particularly good governance and accountability.

“Magkakaroon po, magbibigay po ng mga undisputed facts and figures ang Pangulo—kasama po ‘yun doon sa address niya on Monday,” she said, adding that apart from the constitutional mandate of the President, the chief executive will talk about the real state of the nation.

The President’s Cabinet has just concluded the Pilipinas Natin Cabinet Cluster fora in the run up to his SONA this Monday. The series tackled economic growth, investments, climate change mitigation and food security.

Other clusters held their separate fora discussing human development and poverty reduction, climate change adaptation and mitigation, security, justice and peace as well as good governance and anti-corruption. (PCOO)
