Pilipinas Natin' goes to Davao City
“Pilipinas Natin” volunteerism campaign will be launched in Davao City on Tuesday, August 16, to coincide with the city’s week-long celebration of the 26th Kadayawan Festival.
Pilipinas Natin hopes to inculcate among the Davao youth the spirit of volunteerism and encourage them to participate in nation-building.
Kadayawan is an indigenous Bagobo word that refers to bountiful harvest and thanksgiving, the celebration of which is what the festival is all about.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte will host the launching of Pilipinas Natin in Davao, the first provincial sortie after it was launched at the Philippine Sports Arena in Pasig City on June 30, the first anniversary of President Benigno S. Aquino III’s inaugural. The President himself gave a speech in that launching.
Whole-day activities have been prepared for Tuesday’s Pilipinas Natin launching in Davao City, starting with “Kadayawan Para sa Kabataan,” from 8 to 10:30 a.m., where some 2,000 children from ages 6 to 10, will have a grand birthday party celebration at the Matina Gym of the University of Mindanao.
The grand birthday party will have educational sessions like story-telling, coloring, feeding program, and games and entertainment.
In the afternoon, from 1 to 5 p.m., the launching of Pilipinas Natin in the city will be held at the Almendras Hall where some 5,000 youth leaders from Davao City schools and communities will gather to hear what is Pilipinas Natin and its purpose.
In the evening from 7 to 9 p.m., Mayor Duterte will facilitate the “Kabayanihan sa Kadayawan,” intended to encourage Davao’s business sector to raise funds for the permanent relocation of the victims of the recent floods in Davao.
Pilipinas Natin will have a counterpart effort to Duterte’s initiative by mobilizing volunteers to build houses for the poor.
Kadayawan is dedicated to the city’s 10 indigenous communities. The festival was first celebrated in September 1986, a few months after the People Power Revolution.
It was then called Apo Duwaling Festival. Apo referred to Mount Apo in the area and duwaling represented durian fruit and waling-waling orchids, which are also bountiful in the area.
The festival was later renamed into Kadayawan. On May 11, 1995 then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, father of Sara, signed Executive Order No. 10 declaring Kadayawan as an annual festival to be celebrated during the third week of August.(PCOO)
