Aquino to keynote Chinese-Filipino Business Club Convention Thursday

President Benigno S. Aquino III will keynote the 7th Biennial Convention of the Chinese-Filipino Business Club, Incorporated (CFBCI) that will be held at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel on Thursday, February 9.

Joining the President will be Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, CFBCI president Lino Uy and Manila Hotel Chairman Emilio Yap.

Aside from addressing the group, the President will also witness the ceremonial turnover of thirty motorcycle keys to Police Director General Nicanor Bartolome symbolizing the CFBCI’s support for the ongoing transformation and upgrade program of the Philippine National Police.

The Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. (CFBCI) was organized as a socio-civic, non-profit organization whose primary goal is to support the government in its goal of creating an environment conducive to job creation and economic advancement.

From its inception in 1998, CFBCI is now composed of 400 members from all over the Philippines whose membership includes pillars of the Chinese-Filipino trade and commerce, manufacturing, construction, banking and other industries. (PCOO)

Aquino declares Feb. 10 as special non-working day in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte

President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared February 10 which falls on a Friday, as a special non-working day in the city of Laoag in celebration of its Pamulinawen Festival.

In Proclamation No. 328 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr. on January 31, President Aquino issued the declaration to give the people of Laoag the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies. The festival showcases the Ilocano culture in dance and drama.

The Pamulinawen Festival is the annual fiesta of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte to honor St. William, the patron saint of Laoag. The residents believe the patron saint intercedes to the Lord to save Laoag from calamities. (PCOO)

Aquino celebrates 52nd birthday visiting quake damaged areas; assures victims of immediate recovery

DUMAGUETE CITY
: President Benigno S. Aquino III spent his 52nd birthday on Wednesday visiting earthquake-affected areas in Guihulngan City and La Libertad in Negros Oriental following a 6.9-magnitude quake that hit the Visayas on Monday.


The President inspected damaged areas and met residents affected by the earthquake. He also oversaw government relief operations in disaster-affected areas.

In an interview following his visits to Guihulngan City and La Libertad, the chief executive assured that there are enough government resources to help affected communities recover from the disaster and bring everything back to normal.

“Siguro more than anything, kanina yung nakita nating problema sa isang bagay na medyo nakakasakit sa damdamin lalo na yung nawalan ng buhay. Pero on the other hand, talaga namang maraming kakayanan ang gobyerno ngayon para maibalik sila as much as possible sa normal na sitwasyon,” the President said.

“So yung maraming kawani ng gobyerno, local, national, may mga NGOs (non-government organizations) rin tumutulong na nagdamay-damay dito para mabawasan nga ‘yung paghihirap ng ating mga kababayan doon.”

The President said he has seen the extent of the damaged particularly in Guihulngan City and La Libertad, which he said may be exacerbated by the continuing aftershocks that according to authorities may last for several more weeks. He also stressed the great necessity of the residents for potable water.

Cabinet members who were with the President during the briefing about the disaster said relief and reconstruction efforts continue to help the affected communities.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said around 6,000 food packs are expected to be distributed Wednesday as well as bottled water, tents, blankets and mosquito nets.

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman said, cash-for-work program will be provided those affected to help them recover from the disaster and at the same time rebuild their communities.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Energy (DOE) said they are both working to immediately construct damaged roads and bridges including power lines destroyed by the earthquake.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), on the other hand, assured the President about the steady supply of basic commodities as well as ensuring that prices remain at normal levels.

For its part, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it has deployed a public safety battalion to ensure peace and order and help other government agencies transport necessary goods for the affected residents. (PCOO)

Aquino wants safer structural design and immediate reconstruction of vital infrastructure in quake-ravaged areas in Negros Oriental

President Benigno S. Aquino III, who visited quake-ravaged communities in Negros Oriental, said he wants new design and immediate reconstruction of vital infrastructure so that economic activity could start in disaster-affected areas.


At the same time, the Chief Executive said the peace and order must be maintained so that basic goods are transported to the needy with prices staying at normal levels.

“When you start designing all of these road networks make sure that we do not have a situation na mawala yung connectivity. Paano ba natin ma-ma-maximize na ma-maintain yung road networks, for instance, to be able to bring in whatever has to be brought in?” the President said as he asked the officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways tasked to undertake the rebuilding of the damaged infrastructure.

The President, who celebrated his 52nd birthday on Wednesday, toured the disaster areas in Guihulngan City and La Libertad in Negros Oriental and assessed the damaged of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the area on Monday and oversaw ongoing relief and reconstruction efforts.

The government will be doing an inventory of public and private infrastructure so that these structures meet the country’s building code, which according to law must withstand a 7.2 earthquake, the President said.

With regards to the supply of basic goods, the President said he has talked with manufacturers and suppliers to access their products directly from factories in coordination with the National Food Authority (NFA) to reduce prices. He said manufacturers and distributors are shipping by Thursday and could to be selling the goods by Friday.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) was given an instruction by the President to ensure that prices of basic commodities remain at normal level. He added that according to law, he is authorized to impose price control once a state of calamity is declared.

Because of reports of disorder in buying basic goods, the President said the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will ensure order in calamity areas so that basic products reach the people.

“The PNP and AFP also will be assisting to ensure that we have peace and order habang dinadala yung mga relief supplies,” he said.

According to the latest figure released by the provincial government of Negros Oriental, 26 persons died in the quake with 50 still missing. The quake also resulted to about P665 million worth of damage to infrastructure and affected economic activity in the province.

A separate figure from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) says more than 12,000 families were affected by Monday’s earthquake. (PCOO)
