Malacañang says election of COA chair to board of Supreme Audit Institutions in India is manifestation of credible auditing establishment in the country

The feat of Commission on Audit (COA) chairperson Grace Tan, who has been elected to the Board of the Asian Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) in India last month, is a manifestation that the Philippines has a credible and trustworthy auditing institution.

In a statement issued on Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the Aquino administration congratulated Grace Tan who won a seat in the ASOSAI Board during an election in Jaipur, India last February.

"The Philippines was in the distinguished company of China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Thailand, and Bangladesh for membership to the Board, with 11 candidates in total," Lacierda said.

"This represents a comeback for the Philippines, which has gained a seat after a long time of not having been considered for membership in the Board. The Philippines joins South Korea, whose Auditor-General is Secretary-General of the Institution, as an Asian member," he said

Lacierda said Tan's term of membership will be from 2012 until 2015.

The Aquino administration will look forward to Tan's contributions to the organization.

"This demonstration of peer confidence comes at the heels of the earlier selection of the COA as the external auditor of the World Health Organization in May 2011. The Philippines can, once more, hold its head high as having a credible, trustworthy auditing institution," Lacierda said.

Last February 29, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai took over as the Chairman of the ASOSAI. (PCOO)

“These killings strike at the very heart of the peaceful, orderly, and safe community that UPLB has been, and must be again. We will not rest until justice is done and the perpetrators are punished. We would like to assure concerned faculty, parents, students, and all those in the UPLB community that steps are being taken to make the campus a safe place to work and live in, and visit,” Lacierda said in the statement on Monday.

The police force, Lacierda said, has also been augmented and the investigations are now in full swing to put behind bars those responsible for the criminalities within the campus.

“Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo has relieved thirteen policemen who constitute the UP Los Baños police, which operate under the university authorities. Sec. Robredo has designated the Provincial Police of Laguna to take over. He has also ordered the augmentation of the police in the grounds of UPLB and the intensified investigation of the three cases of murder that have shocked and horrified the UPLB community,” Lacierda said.

Los Banos police chief Supt. Dante Novicio was reassigned to the provincial headquarters of Laguna. He will be replaced by Chief Insp. Conrad Basungsong.

Reports bared a string of rape and robbery incidents in the area over the past five months, the recent of which was the killing of 19-year old BS Agriculture student from UPLB, Rey Bernard Penaranda. (PCOO)
