Malacanang says country’s economy moving in right direction

The decline in the unemployment rate as indicated by the January 2012 Labor Force Survey of the National Statistics Office (NSO) is a manifestation that the Philippine economy is moving in the right direction without losing sight of the overarching goal of inclusive and equitable growth, a Palace official said.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda issued the statement during the regular press briefing in Malacanang on Thursday in response to the latest Labor Force Survey indicating that the unemployment rate in the country is down further to 7.2%.

Reports said the Philippines jobless rate declined to 7.2 percent in January from 7.4 percent a year ago.

"In yet another manifestation of the upward trajectory of the Philippine economy, an estimated 1.1 million new jobs were generated in January 2012 compared to a mere 292 thousand net employment created in the same period last year," Lacierda said.

"While employment grew significantly by 3% in January 2012, coming from only 0.8% in January 2011, the quality of employment during the period also improved with full-time employment rebounding to 2.6% this year from negative 2.6% last year," he noted.

Lacierda also said the survey indicates that the underemployment rate also fell from 19.4% in January 2011 to 18.8% in January this year.

He pointed out that the growth of employment may be attributed to increased private sector investments and intensified public spending in infrastructure and agriculture.

"We note that the following regions posted high employment rates: Cagayan Valley, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), MIMAROPA, (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), the Zamboanga Peninsula, and SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City)," he said. Malacanang says Aquino government to continuously implement measures for safety of citizenry

Malacanang assured the citizenry, including the commuters and the transport unions, that the Aquino government will continuously implement measures and exert much needed efforts to ensure not only the safety of the people but also to augment the daily earnings of those who are in the transport sector.

He thanked the various transport groups who remained firm to their responsibilities to the commuters and continued to convey them to their respective destinations rather than participate in the senseless undertakings that could create more hassles and confusion to the riding public.

Lacierda also expressed gratitude to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), headed by its chairman Francis Tolentino, for providing support and for attending to the needs of the public.

When asked on the initial assessment of the effects of the “transport caravan” and other protest activities of some groups, Lacierda said that the strike did not directly affect the commuting public as of noon time.

“Initial assessment is wala pong pasaherong na-stranded because we made sure that there will be transportations available for the riding public and that’s our number one concern, na hindi ho maapektuhan ang publiko… iyan po ang sinabi naming kahapon at based on the assessment of MMDA chairman Tolentino mukhang hindi ho apektado, we hope na patuloy pa rin kasi buong maghapon po yung kanilang transport strike so we will continue to assess the situation po or rather si MMDA chairman Tolentino will be assessing the situation,” Lacierda said.

He also bared that the transport group “Piston” which was included among those who staged the “transport caravan” failed to file a petition for a fare rate increase before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), a process done by the other transport unions.

“The fact is and the truth of the matter is… if Piston is concerned about its members, why they did not file a petition for rate increase in LTFRB, di b a basic po iyon?

Apart from the MMDA and the non-participation of some transport groups, Lacierda also noted the proactive approach of the Local Government Units (LGUs) to avert the possible problems the transport strike may cause their constituents.

“We would like to commend the local governments on their decision to be proactive in this regard instead of avoiding a situation na mape-perwisyo po ang kanilang mga constituents ay minabuti na po nila na mag-suspende na lang ng klase but nais ko lamang i-emphasize po na ito ay desisyon nila at wala ho kaming ginawa dun, we just mentioned na we are preparing for contingency measures and we commend their decisions to help their constituents,” Lacierda said.
