Malacanang is confident new Ombudsman would serve the best interest of the people

Malacanang made an assurance Saturday that the new Ombudsman to be chosen by the President will serve the best interest of the people.

During a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte was asked about the Palace’s assurance after some bishops said they’ll now strictly monitor how the Aquino administration fights corruption.

“I think this (concern) is not only for the bishops but for all our kababayans,” Valte said. “Matagal na po nating sinasabi na ang kailangan nating Ombudsman ay yung magiging tunay na tanod-bayan ng ating bansa. We welcome yung pagbabantay na gagawin po ng ating mga bishops sa magiging proseso.”

Valte mentioned President Aquino has requested the Judicial and Bar Council to start the process of selection for the new Ombudsman after Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez resigned Friday. Gutierrez resignation is effective May 6.

While the President has not expressed his preference, whoever he will appoint as Ombudsman needs to be someone who has been persistent in the fight against corruption, with considerable integrity and competence to execute the job, continued Valte.

Now that Gutierrez has resigned, Valte said the impeachment trial will no longer proceed, and it is up to those accusing her to bring their case against Gutierrez to the court. Once they charge Gutierrez in court, Valte said it would be up for the court to decide.

She noted that the preliminary investigation will be the job of the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Justice. If any prospective case passes the level of the preliminary investigation then a case could be filed at the Sandigangbayan, she said. (PCOO)
