Aquino to lead nationwide launch of DOH exercise program

President Benigno S. Aquino will lead the nationwide launch of the Department of Health’s exercise program that will be held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle on Sunday (May 15).

Health Secretary Enrique Ona will join the President in launching the nationwide fitness event dubbed “Ehersisyo Pangkalusugan Para sa Lahat 2011.”

Ona said that the exercise program featuring different sports activities is meant to encourage all Filipinos to get into the healthy habit of exercising regularly to combat illnesses.

"Exercise is for everyone. All ages from all walks of life can and must engage in regular physical activity," Ona said.

According to the Department of Health, which is at the forefront of this effort, non-communicable diseases, mainly cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes represent a leading threat to human health and development.

To address this, the DoH is working in close coordination with the Civil Service Commission, and other stakeholders to prevent, control and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases through advocacy and promotion of healthy lifestyle practices.

It suggests regular physical activity such as walking, jogging, running, biking, volleyball, sipa, arnis, futsal, wall climbing, badminton, basketball, aerobics for kids and Tai-Chi/pilates and Yoga.

This activity will be participated in by government and local government employees, non-government organizations, government and privately owned hospitals, medical professionals, schools and private individuals. (PCOO)

Aquino orders pursuit of forest guard killers in Laguna

President Benigno Aquino III instructed the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to go after the killers of a forest guard in Laguna who was killed recently.

“The President instructed the PNP and the NBI to immediately capture the killers of forest guard Elpidio Malinao in Laguna. At the same time we are extending our condolences to the family of Mr. Malinao,” Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview Saturday over state-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.

Malinao was a forest guard at the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystem covering Mount Makiling when he was killed on Monday (May 9). He was gunned down in Bgy. Maitim, Bay, Laguna after attending a court hearing.

President Aquino led the awarding of “environmental heroes” at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Quezon City. Malinao was the seventh protector of the environment given due posthumous recognition on Friday (May 13).

“Kinikilala rin po natin sa araw na ito ang anim na Pilipino na ginampanan ang kanilang tungkulin para sa kalikasan hanggang sa huling sandali ng kanilang buhay. Sila po ang pinarangalan natin ng ‘enviromental heroes’ award ngayon,” the President said in his speech during the event.

“Maging mabuting halimbawa nawa ang kanilang dedikasyon at propesyunalismo sa lahat ng Pilipino,” he added.

Among the DENR employees who received the posthumous award include: Kennedy Eber Bayani of Apayao province, Rolando Sinday and Jacinto Dragas of Surigao del Sur and Pierre Gillo of Samar. Non-DENR employees are Nelson Luna and Christopher Mazo of Surigao del Sur.

The families of the victims will receive financial assistance, livelihood support, and scholarship grants, according to the President.

The President planted a Narra seedling at the Heroes Park at the back of the DENR building in Quezon City following the awarding ceremony, which is one of the highlights of the National Greening Program (NGP) he launched earlier.

The Heroes Park was established in 1995 as a way of paying tribute to the men and women of the DENR who perished defending their ideals of protecting the environment. (PCOO)
