Aquino to keynote 102nd Commencement Exercise of UP College of Medicine Sunday

President Benigno S. Aquino III will be the Guest of Honor and keynote speaker of the 102nd Commencement Exercise of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) that will be held at the SMX Convention Center of the SM Mall of Asia on Sunday.

The graduation ceremony will be held simultaneous with the closing ceremony of the Philippine General Hospital’s post-graduate internship course.

Welcoming the President will be UP President Alfredo Pascual, UP Chancellor Ramon Arcadio, UPCM Dean Alberto Roxas, and UPCM Regionalization Program and Return Service Agreement Chairman and PGH Director Jose Gonzales.

The UPCM Class 2011 and the PGH Post-Graduate Interns Batch2011 are composed of 153 and 110 graduates from UP and from different medical schools all over the country, respectively.

The newest batch of medical practitioners has expressed their desire to emulate the President’s genuine leadership and service to the country in their respective practices.

The Philippine Medical School, forerunner of the UPCM was established by virtue of the Second Philippine Commission Act 1415 dated December 1, 1905, as a response to the urgent need for more doctors in the country. (PCOO)


Government set to address rising number of nursing graduates

The government will look for other programs that could help nursing graduates get jobs after college, a Palace official said on Saturday.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan Saturday that the Aquino administration will look for appropriate programs to assist nursing graduates find jobs.

Valte was responding to questions from Palace reporters who asked her how the government is addressing the rising number of nursing graduates that compete for jobs after leaving schools.

“We will have to see. We will look for other programs like the RN HEALS so we can help nursing graduates,” Valte said.

The Palace spokesperson was referring to the Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Services (RN HEALS) program being carried out by the Department of Health that started early this year. The program that employs registered nurses and is being implemented jointly by the DOH and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Valte said that in the last two months, the DOH was able to deploy 10,000 nurses all over the country under the RN HEALs program. The nurses will help in the implementation of the conditional cash transfer program of the government.

According to Health Secretary Enrique Ona, the RN HEALS program is aimed at addressing the shortage of skilled nurses in 1,221 rural and “unserved or under-served" communities in the country for one year.

Registered nurses who qualify for the RN HEALS program are given an allowance of P8,000 per month, plus a minimum of P2,000 from the local government unit (LGU) they are serving.

LGUs are in charge to provide them board and lodging. And aside from supervising the nurses, LGUs also ensure their security. (PCOO)


Malacanang declares Foundation Day anniversary of Maramag, Bukidnon special non-working day

Malacanang has declared July 1, 2011 as a special non-working day in the municipality of Maramag, province of Bukidnon in celebration of the 55th Foundation Day anniversary.

By virtue of Proclamation No. 163 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr. on May 5, 2011, the Palace declared July 1, 2011 which falls on Friday, as a special non-working day to give the people of the municipality of Maramag the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion.

Maramag was formally created as a municipality through Executive Order No. 272 issued by then President Carlos P. Garcia on July 1, 1956.

Maramag, a landlocked municipality of Bukidnon, is approximately 158 kilometers southeast of Cagayan de Oro City, around 53 Kilometers south of Malaybalay City and 154 Kilometers from Davao City. (PCOO)


Malacanang declares 145th birth anniversary of ‘Hen. Terio’ in Batangas special non-working day

The Palace also declared Monday, May 23, 2011 as a special non-working day in the municipality of Calaca, province of Batangas in celebration of the 145th birth anniversary of General Eleuterio Marasigan.

Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr. signed on May 13, 2011 Proclamation No. 167, declaring May 23, 2011 which falls on Monday as a special non-working day in the municipality of Calaca.

The occasion marks the birth anniversary of General Marasigan, a great Calagueno and patriot of the libertarian struggle in the province of Batangas.

"It is but fitting and proper that the people of the Municipality of Calaca, Province of Batangas be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies," the proclamation said.

Marasigan, popularly known as “Heneral Terio,” was a Filipino revolutionary and a patriot of the liberation struggle in the province of Batangas. He was born in Calaca, Batangas on May 23, 1866.

He exposed himself to danger during the turbulent days of the Philippine revolution. He organized the Batallion Maluya under the patronage of Doña Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio, the so-called "Godmother of Revolutionary Forces."

He was designated commander-in-chief of the Batangas revolutionary forces, with General Miguel Malvar as the Secretary of War. Marasigan died with his boots on at the age of 45 on February 8, 1911. (PCOO)
