President Aquino advocates regular exercise

President Benigno S. Aquino III joined on Sunday the Department of Health, Cabinet Secretaries, local government units and hundreds of fitness buffs in advocating the need for each and every Filipino to exercise regularly in order to live a healthy life.

The President led the launching of the DoH’s nationwide fitness event dubbed “Ehersisyo Pangkalusugan Para sa Lahat 2011” held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle that aims to encourage all Filipinos to get into the healthy habit of exercising regularly to combat illnesses.

“Ang kalusugan po ay isang kayamanan na dapat nating bigyang-halaga, at isang paraan po ang regular na pag-eehersisyo para pangalagaan ito,” the President said, adding that regular exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and diabetes.

“Maraming Pilipino po ang nalalagay sa peligro ang kalusugan dahil sa NCD, na dulot ng hindi pag-eehersisyo at hindi tamang pagkain. Kaya naman seryoso po tayo sa pagtutulak ng mga programa tulad ng isinasagawa natin ngayon,” he added.

He likewise stressed the importance of regularly exercising in order to build resistance and become strong and healthy; qualities the Filipino people need to make it to the “finish line” of progress.

(PCOO)

President Aquino visits USS Carl Vinson

President Benigno S. Aquino III visited the United States nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson on Saturday (May 14), Presidential Communication Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ramon “Ricky”Carandang announced Sunday.

Carandang made the announcement in an interview with media at the sidelines after President Aquino formally launched the Department of Health’s nationwide fitness program “Ehersisyo Pangkalusugan Para sa Lahat 2011” held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle Sunday morning.

He said the visit, which took the most part of the President’s day, was “like a courtesy call.”

“The President was invited to go there, nagpunta siya. May mga Filipino troops doon eh…more less 100 Filipino-Americans. He addressed the Fil-Am troops, talked to them and then we had lunch with the Admiral and the Captain who were in-charge of the boat,” Carandang said.

He said the President and his contingent were shown the take-off and landing of fighter jets on a carrier.

Carandang said the President and his group were “impressed” with the display of US military precision as he pointed out that the visit was just a “part of the normal defense cooperation with the US and we were happy to see them here.”

The USS Carl Vinson, escorted by the guided missile cruisers USS Bunker Hill and USS Shiloh and the destroyer USS Gridley, is scheduled to dock in Manila from May 15 to 18 for a four-day routine port call and goodwill visit starting Sunday. (PCOO)
